Zelensky's rejection of an armistice with Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected a ceasefire with Russia. He said that even if there is a ceasefire, Russia will be on top and they can be trampled.
"A cease-fire in the Ukrainian battlefield does not mean a stop in the war," he said during a visit to Estonia.
After Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, a limited ceasefire was sometimes proposed but never implemented. After 22 months of war and with the possibility of a longer conflict, both sides are trying to rebuild their weapons.
Zelensky has said that Ukraine needs an air defense system to protect it from Russian attacks. According to him, Russia is repeatedly carrying out airstrikes on civilians in the Ukrainian territory, but Moscow officials say that their aim is only to target military targets.
More than 500 drones and missiles were fired between Dec. 29 and Jan. 2 by a large-scale Russian barrage, according to officials in Kiev. Officials say Ukraine's air defense resources are being used up and the country will be insecure unless future arms supplies are secured.
